These white tubes are commonly seen attached to any hard surface on the shore - stones, shells and even pieces of wood. They are made by a small marine worm which lives inside and creates more chalky tube as the worm grows bigger. When the tide is in the worm extends a crown of tentacles which act like a net to catch passing food particles. These can be withdrawn instantly if disturbed, and a small chalky door blocks the entrance to keep out intruders and prevent the worm from drying out at low tide.

Keelworms can grow on any suitable hard surface, including old sea shells.
