Emigration

By Kenneth Campbell - Added 16/04/2014

Audio of Kenneth Campbell, recalling those who left Harris for all corners of the globe, and one particular emigrant’s expression of homesickness. Dur: 0.43

Many had no choice, without land to support them, but to take the emigrant ships to Australia or Canada. Few ever saw sight of Harris again. Kenneth Campbell recites the words of a neighbour from Scadabay, Bannatyne MacLeod, who emigrated to Canada along with his brother and sister.

I would rather be gathering seaweed
And hauling it from the shore
And spreading it on the earth
Than to be in Manitoba
