Building the Croft House
By Kirsty Macleod - Added 17/04/2014
Audio of Chirsty MacLeod nee MacKay telling how the family croft house at 1 Grosebay was built.
Chirsty MacLeod describes for the Harris Historical Society the work involved in building their family croft house. Her father insisted that 3 mounds of stone were necessary to build the house, you had to be sure not to run out! The stonemasons also did the joinery - they were local tradesmen. The house was completed in time for her own wedding, the first event in the new home. The old thatched cottage they left isn't to be seen today, the stone from that building was used when they eventually built this section of the Golden Road.
