The wheatear is a migrant bird spending the summer here on Harris and the winter in Northern Africa. This is the first of our summer visitors to arrive, with the first wheatears arriving in late March. With their black eye-stripe and white base to the tail these are distinctive birds even at a distance. They are most common on the rocky moorland areas where they nest in rock crevices and fed on insects but they can be found anywhere from the rocky summits to the coastal machair.
