The tufted vetch is a member of the pea family. It uses tendrils to support itself as it grows up embankments – like a pea plant growing up a cane.

The flower are blue-violet, and when they die down they leave behind a brown seed pod which has up to six seeds in it.

The leaves are in pairs on the stem and look a bit like the rungs on a ladder.
